2016 marked an important milestone for Repowering in the quest to provide young Londoners with the opportunities and skills to learn and grow into the future green leaders of the city, and beyond.
Repowering has been running internships since 2012; working with young people based in the neighbourhoods where the solar projects have been installed, including Roupell Park on Brixton Hill and Banister House in Hackney.
These programmes saw amazing achievements like Victoria Omubuwajo being awarded the Solar Power Portal Intern of the Year in 2015, interns Ziggy and Israel being having their concerns raised in the Houses of Parliament surrounding the government’s change in support for renewables and Roupell Park’s own, Kemal, using the Repowering experience to jump start his media enterprise with super cars.
Repowering’s Energy Garden internship last year saw young people from all corners of the capital city learn about community empowerment through gardening, turning food waste into energy and generating your own electricity. They were also shown methods of identifying community needs as well as the ins and outs of setting up a social enterprise. These invaluable skill learning sessions were rewarded with A QA Certifications, with all interns receiving 6 certificates each. These can be used to boost employability in any sector, although environmental champions are what London needs most. Being able to offer this stepping stone for London youth was a Repowering exclusive, and it doesn’t stop there.
Repowering is now looking to celebrate these successes by launching a new Brixton wide internship for all young people who are motivated to help the community and the planet, and get paid whilst doing it.
Along with the Transition Town Brixton group and the Brixton Impact Hub, Repowering has returned to its roots focussing on developing energy efficiency models as part of Brixton Energy in 2017.
