Supporting young people in Brixton’s communities is an important element of what the Repowering London cooperative aims to achieve. Lambeth suffers from high unemployment and is the fifth most deprived Borough in London, so initiatives that enable people to learn new skills to improve their employment prospects are vital.
That’s why Repowering London felt it was important to be able to offer work experience placements to local young people, and in doing so, stimulate the local economy.
Agamemnon Otero, Director of Repowering London said:
“We were fortunate to be able to include young people in the development and installation of Brixton’s second solar energy cooperative. They can now show prospective employers that they’re serious about their careers and building the skills they need to get a job.”
Increasing skills & creating opportunity
One young person involved in the installation was 19 year old Brixton resident, Emmanuel.
“I am in my second year of college at Richmond-upon-Thames College studying Mechanical Engineering and I got involved with Repowering London as it seemed like a great opportunity to get some practical experience to compliment my studies.
Working with the professional installers, Southern Solar, was great because they explained how the components in the panels work together to capture sunlight and turn it into electricity.
Other things I learned during the work experience –
- A radio really comes in handy when working on a roof top!
- Solar panels work perfectly well in cloudy conditions and do not depend only on sunlight to generate electricity. This was good to know since we don’t get much sunshine in the UK!
I was surprised to learn that the solar project was funded by local residents rather than the Council. This experience showed me how much people are willing to work together to bring about positive change within their communities.
In the future, I hope that Repowering London will continue to help establish clean energy projects such as Brixton Energy Solar 1 and 2. It’s been a really positive experience for me so far – earning while also getting an insight into skills I need to find a job.”
